The locking nut is just to adjust it to the proper orientation for the shift pattern.

Oh yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of that. My aftermarket doesn't have the shift pattern. Another plus for no shift pattern.

i'm in the same boat. i'm removing the center console and shifter to regrease anyway. I picked up all the peripherals- plastic bits, new shift knob, etc. just incase i make a real hash of the deal.

I'm glad i'm not the only one.
