Default Removing oem shift knob

I have read all the threads on removing the oem shift knob. My question is, once the knob is off, is there a way to remove that larger washer looking thing that holds the shift boot snug against the shift knob? I'm trying to install a deep counter sunk Greddy knob and I need to get that thing off to set the knob to its deepest position. I used the greddy in my old CR and don't remember having this problem.

It's a nut, so it just unscrews off the shift lever.......

Is yours cross threaded or something?
