It's that time of year again, time to start thinking about running the 2002 Cannonball One Lap of America. This will be the 3rd time that the Fugawi Racing team will be competing in an S2000 (we have also run the event for 5 years in a Corvette ZR-1 and 2 years in a Mustang Cobra). Last year there was only one other team of brave souls in another S2000 (just so you know that we're not the only ones crazy enough to do it) so we're putting out the call for all those who are interested to join us in this very unique event.
Check out the One Lap website for more details at www.onelapofamerica.com or email me directly if you have specific questions at fdracer@attbi.com. And to answer your first question, yes, you can get a week's worth of clean clothes for two, a helmet, tools, umbrellas, chairs, cameras and a few spare parts in the trunk with room to spare.
Sorry, this is a little late, but congratulations on 5th in class and 24th overall out of 83 competitors in the Cannonball One Lap of America event. Somehow, I missed this announcement and the fact that it was in early May (earlier than prior years?).
I enjoyed meeting you and your dad at last year's event at MIS and would have enjoyed rooting for you on the day-by-day reports had I had my act together as a fan.
I got'a ask how does the S2000 do on a "dirt oval", such as the Tulsa Speedway? Also, I still wonder how anyone can sleep in the S2k with the buck-board ride (but then I remind myself that not every state has crappy roads like MI) but with 5,200 miles to cover probably a light sleeper like myself would eventually do it out of exhaustion!
BTW, I see Keith Maddock (fellow S2k owner) finished 37th and 4th in class (lux sedans) in his older Audi. Congrats, as well. By now he's probably sold his S2k since he was heading to Germany.
Thanks for the congrats! This was the 10th year that my brother and I have run the One Lap. (You must have met the Sibley's last year - a father and son team.) This year was another great year. By my calculations, we were the top finishing, normally aspirated, under 2 liter, 4 cylinder entry. Too bad they don't give a trophy for that. Our only mishap was hitting an armadillo in the middle of the night somewhere in either Texas or Mississippi.
BTW, Car & Driver Television will be featuring this year's One Lap this week. It will run on TNN on Sat., July 20th at 9:00 AM and Sun., July 21st at 10:00 AM. All times are EST so you may want to check your local listing for the exact time. I don't know what they plan to show on the program, but since we didn't finish in the top 10, I wouldn't expect too much. But then again, you never know.
