Default Advice on Transmission and Differential Fluids.

Hey Everyone,

While I know there is many sources of advice on here regarding this topic, I just wanted to post up my personal story to see if I can get some feedback regarding my car. I own a MY00 with 28,500 miles on the clock and was wondering if for the 30,000 mile mark it would be worthwhile to change out the transmission and differential fluids. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic Motor Oil and was also wondering if anyone had experience with their differential fluids or if they had their own recommendations? While 30,000 miles might be too early for these two maintenances (note: I could be wrong), I figured with the car just turning 12 years old (and I'm pretty sure the original owner changed them out at 15,000 miles) that I might as well just change my Transmission and Differential fluids at the same time every 15,000 miles (because I am going to be doing 15,000 miles a lot more often then the original owner did haha. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your time!

Absolutely change them out. Transmission fluid interval is 15k and diff fluid is 30k. However your car hasn't been driven too many miles so it's likely the fluid in there now is OLD. It can never hurt to change the fluid early, but it can certainly hurt to change it late.

Thanks for the reply, your response was what I figured which was why I brought this topic to discussion. Do you have any recommendations of differential fluid. I plan on swapping out the transmission fluid with Honda MTF. Thanks for your reply!

Thanks that's the response I've been looking for. I plan on picking up:

5 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-30 Motor Oil
1 OEM Spec. Oil Filter
2 Bottles of Honda MTF
1 Bottle of Mobil 1 75w90 Synthetic Gear Oil.

I will post on the difference that this combination makes for future references to other people with similar questions.

People generally don't like Mobile 1 in this car for some reason. If you've got some money to spend on synthetic fluids, try Amsoil instead.

I'm actually not sure which type of oil the original owner used, but he did take the car to Honda for every single service every August. I have only changed the fluids once and that would be the motor oil using Mobil 1 10W-30 Synthetic. The reason I posted this up is because I haven't changed my fluids for 3,700 and I checked the levels yesterday and was about a half a quart low and the oil was looking pretty burnt up.

While I have no preference in oils, would it be okay to switch around and use Amsoil rather then Mobil 1 oil? I try to keep everything pretty uniform as I am pretty anal about my car. Also, I know some people use 5w-30 and some use 10w-30 motor oil, considering I live in the Philadelphia suburbs and it can get pretty cold here but not freezing, should I use an oil with higher viscosity like 5w-30 rather then 10w-30 (I could be wrong on the viscosity and have it flipped). Either way I'm open to recommendations. Just want to keep this car in tip top shape as even though I bought it to drive it, I want to make sure that it is well taken care of for all the miles I put on it.

Thanks for your input!

Wow! Thank you for all the right-ups and information, I really appreciate it, definitely a wealth of information and I appreciate you taking the time to put all these resources at my finger tips! If you have any advice on fluids, our would rate the current fluids you use I would really appreciate that as well!

For transmission i used gm synchromesh and it works great. i read the reviews for it on here and people loved it. made my tranny smooth and all the knotchy-ness was gone. for the diff i used valvoline 75w-90, but heard great things about redline and amsoil.

best in my opinon.

engine oil
1) amsoil
2) royal purple (even tho its over rated now)
3) castrol edge
-i never run mobile one anymore. my ap1 burns oil a LOT of mobile one, like a quart 1200 miles.

transmisson fuild
1) gm synchromesh
2) redline
3) honda mtf

rear diff
1) redline
2) amsoil
3) LE Almasol
