best in my opinon.

engine oil
1) amsoil
2) royal purple (even tho its over rated now)
3) castrol edge
-i never run mobile one anymore. my ap1 burns oil a LOT of mobile one, like a quart 1200 miles.

transmisson fuild
1) gm synchromesh
2) redline
3) honda mtf

rear diff
1) redline
2) amsoil
3) LE Almasol
I've done two oil changes with Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil and I haven't been impressed in my AP1. They claim you can go 5,000 miles between oil changes with synthetics and I always change every 3,000-4,000 miles and the oil just isn't impressive. Most reviews that I have read really recommend Amsoil so I think this time I'm going to give it a try this time around. Do you use 5W-30 or 10W-30 to OEM spec? In regards to the rear differential, I think I'm going to go with Amsoil to keep it consistent with the motor oil even though they have no relation it's just easier to remember, in regards to the MTF I think I'm just going to stick with Honda MTF as it was obviously designed for the car and I have heard 0 issues with it and like to play things safe rather then sorry.

For the rear differential, would you recommend 75w90? I was planning on using Mobil 1 for the differential and oil but I think I'm going to go a different route this time around after reading up on it more? Thanks for your recommendations it has definitely helped me throughout the process!

Just to add my fuel to the fire so to speak...'03 AP1, 38,000 miles.

engine oil- 10w30 amsoil signature synthetic
transmission- amsoil syncromesh
differential- 75w90 synthetic mobil 1 or castrol 75w90 synthetic- has to be LSD compatible
brake- DOT 3 amsoil brake fluid

at 30k miles, just replace all of those. Plus, based on your time, not mileage, replace the spark plugs with OEM recommended.

As an aside, my amsoil dealer also has a marine grade synthetic 10w30 which cost just a little more than the amsoil signature...it apparently has more stuff in it as boats typically sit around more- no idea if its any better than the automotive equivalent.

good luck.

i'd do diff once a year, ap1 diff's are known to go out, and it's easy, takes just 1-2qts.

tranny, i'd do honda mtf, either mobilone or amsoil 75w110 or 75w90 for diff.

Thanks for the input Darcy. My question to you is what makes you choose Amsoil Syncromesh for your transmission fluid over Honda DTF and if you use Amsoil for both motor oil and transmission fluids, why do you choice not to use there differential fluids? Also, good call on the heads up for the spark plugs as those things tend to be forgotten.

I plan on switching over to Amsoil oil from Mobile 1 as that seems to be a popular motor oil and I have really nothing to lose; however, what makes Amsoil better then Honda MTF and what makes Mobil 1 or Castrol better then Amsoil for Differential fluids?

Sorry for all the questions guys, I really enjoy your input and want to make the best decision rather then the fastest decision, also I love feedback and some debate

Don't forget about the brake fluid. I remember reading in the manual that on low use vehicles this should be changed out every 3 years without regard to the few number of miles actually driven. Based on my reading, for the engine oil, if you were intent on going to go to a synthetic, Amsoil would be my choice - my $0.02.

Sounds good, I will be adding Amsoil Brake Fluids to me long list of things to do. Better then paying Honda dealership though and find out the information myself and do all the dirty work haha.

If you have colder weather definitely get 5w-30. But if you live in a warmer place 10w30 will be fine. For the rear diff I would get 75w90, and amsoil is great for the diff. Word of advice is WEAR GLOVES! diff oil smells sooo bad and it will stick around your hands for a while. redline doesnt smell at all and works great so people love it. but you cant go wrong with amsoil.

Going to weigh-in and say I LOVE GM Syncromesh Transmission fluid, and echo 75w-90 for the diff. Those are the best in my experience. I've used the older and newer Honda MTF variants, and the GM Syncromesh feels a tad smoother. It's such a small difference that it may all be in my head, but I digress. Honda MTF is obviously very good as well.

It's in your head

I've used mtf and syncro mesh of 5 diff trannys

Feel identical except the synchromesh degrades quicker.

Synchromesh goes in an s10 4 banger

Mtf in a Honda haha
