Honestly, reviewing the features, the only real benefits I can see to the new system over the old are the new software, USB interface, and the larger datalogging memory. Other than that it just seems like a board redesign with a few more features that would help cars with more cylinders.

Its more complicated than what is described. It is not that aftermarket ecus are illegal, they just cannot be user modifiable to defeat OBD-II (and CARB regs if you live in Cali) and the relevant emission standards for that model year. There are several ways to get approval, but since it is so expensive, it is a lot easier to just sell chips that can't be user modified to violate the law.

In the 42 or so states that have just the OBDII light check, you are home free if your ecu sends that signal, or you know how to wire a relay. In test states they will catch you.

will it still shut off the car if you tap it or has that problem been fixed?

INTJ - Agreed, but its my understanding that the ecus in question *are* modifiable for emissions avoidance and therefore technically for off-road use only. Correct?

Georgia tests through the port so AEM hasn't been compatible thus far. I've been curious as to whether the v2 would work with OBD, but it looks unlikely, so I'll still have to go w/ EMU or KPro to pass emissions. I'm a little disappointed because this looks like a great product.
