Default Ap1 ecu in ap2 question?

Ok i know people have been running this set-up for a while now but just wanted to break down the pro and cons of doing this. The 9k redline would be nice but dont the vtec kick in sooner with the ap2 vs the ap1? wont the ap2 fuel maps and such be different that the ap1? is running really rich with the ap2 motor gonna make it loose whp over the ap2 ecu? Has anyone dyno there car with the ap2 ecu then dyno with the ap1? I think i read somewhere on here some guy lost a little bit of power using the ap1 ecu.

Chris, I'd only run the AP2 if it was my car. Knowing what I do about EMS tuning I'd just never do it. That .2 liters of stroke makes a bigger difference than you think. The timing is going to be off for that motor, and the F22's don't last long being revved to 9k.

With that being said, people have used the AP1 ECU but I'm sure that it was for a short amount of time.

Not really a problem IMO. Ive been running it for around 2 years with no problems, reving my 2.2 liter to 9k also boosted at arond 450 hp. But I dont take it to 9k very often, since the motor makes very good power below redline due to the turbo.

Lots have used AP1 ecu's in AP2's. Most don't rev it to 9k regularly though. I would limit it to around 8500 most of the time.

It's kind of hard to see where 8,500 is on a ap2 tach though.. It just starts blinking the red part at like 7,800 and you can't tell the rpm after 8,000..

Unless I'm missing something here..

yeah I'm not reving it to 9k trust me, I just thought the motor might not be running the strongest with the ap1 ecu maybe even loosing whp.

AP1's run richer up top from factory on the stock ECU, and the AP2 makes more power everywhere and runs leaner which should make more power because it's not just dumping fuel aoverthrowing off the balance of the air fuel mixture..

Also both cars get into vtec at 5900/6000 rpm, but the AP2 gets there quicker because of gearing and makes more power under vtec also..

I've ran a few ap1's (modded) with stock gears and started out of vtec and I always get into vtec first.. (starting in the same gear and same speed obviously)

wouldnt an ap2 shifting at 9k beat an ap2 shifting at 8200 rpm?

Maybe, but that probably would only be because you would be able to hold out gears a little longer.. Also would depend on drive ability.. (keep in mind that you really can't tell true rpm after 8,000 so you're just relying on timing and some heavenly assistance)

I'd rather shift at 8k or 8,200/8,300 (whatever the limiter is) and not abuse my motor for 700/800 more rpm.. The power difference is probably so negligible anyways that it wouldn't be worth the possible damage..

You can take it to 9k but I'd suggest 8.5k. Several of the FI members on here have taken there set-ups to 9k without any problems. If you want power from this set-up or any other set-up you are going to need some form of EMS. Another way to "unlock" a little power from this set up is investing in an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and for starters a VAFC, this is the cheaper alternative. If you can keep the AP1 transmission if you can Good luck-Justin
I've had this motor in my car since 09 untuned, Feb 2011 was when I finally got it tuned, the motor runs strong without a problem since the swap and I auto-x, drag, and spirit drive this piss out of it
