lots of info but you need a special tool to do it. I heard some success with zip ties to do the swap

Would this valve spring compressor work? It looks pretty narrow, as I understand it needs to be to work on the F20C.

Be careful is not to let the cotters fly into an oil gallery once you compress the valve spring. You'll also need to set each cylinder to TDC and preferably fill the cylinders with compressed air to prevent the valves from dropping deep into the engine. Without compressed air, if the valve drops with the piston at TDC, at least the valve won't fall all the way in. Have a magnetic pickup tool handy.

I didn't quite understand the TDC, so thanks for mentioning that.

I'm staring to think that instead of just doing an inspection of my current retainers, I should just swap them our for AP2s while I'm in there.

I don't have compressed air so I'll just have to be very careful.

you cant do this without compressed air. UNLESS.....you do the rope trick. se the piston to BDC as it begins the compression stroke. feed in a good length of nylon role or something that wont snag down the spar plug hole...GENTLY rotate the crank over till the piston comes up. it will stop on its own as the rope will touch the top of the cyl head. this will keep the valve from falling into the engine requiring the head to be removed to rescue it.

NOTE! i always do this and leave like....15 ft of rope out of the head so nothing can fall in completely. i also tie the rope to something outsid ethe car so the end wont ever fall in.
