Sounds like what little you'd gain wouldn't be worth the weight and cost of a set-up like this.

I think you're about the only potential buyer, lol

This will end up more an exercise in futility than a worthwhile performance (or even safety) mod.

When I had my '02 with an AEM V1, I cut that faux vent out completely, but I don't believe there was any performance benefit. If I had it to do over again, I would have left it alone. There is WAY more air available to the air filter than is needed, and opening up the faux vent just increases the amount of dirt and debris that will reach the filter. I don't believe it makes any difference for hydrolock at all, since hydrolock occurs from full submersion, not spashes. I also wouldn't be surprised if the added turbulance around the air filter caused a performance reduction.
I see that there are a lot of posts about how cutting the air vent wouldnt help, but from all the searching ive done, I havent found any actual tests.

I plan to do a dyno within the next few weeks, so ill find a way to cut my vent and do a run with and without the vent, and hopefully have a fan pointing at the bumper that can somewhat simulate driving conditions.

If you have access to an OBDII datalogger, just datalog the MAP curve at WOT from about 2K RPMs to redline. It will start out at barometric pressure (ie. 960 mBar) and slowly decline as the RPMs rise (maybe to 900 mBar). A less restrictive intake will decline less, and a more restrictive intake will decline more. Do this with and without the faux duct cut out to see if it makes a difference.

So as the CAI is, has it been decided that optimum airflow has already been reached. I figured that people open their vents for the purpose similar to the snorkels.

Like I said, I'll run some tests and see what I can figure out and I'll post my findings here when I do.

What about an sc car? If you opened the vent and routed some kind of snorkel to the sc filter. Any chance that would have a positive effect?

There might be a couple HP to be gained from a fully sealed CAI for an SC, but I think the HP per dollar would be VERY low.

it sounds like it might not be worth the effort, but my guess would be a sliding type cover would be effective at making cheap hardware for an open/closed vent.

here's a picture showing the concept i'm describing, although obviously the form fit and function of this one leave a lot to be desired. that's the best i got with 30 seconds of searching.
