Default Custom Heat Shield

I don't feel like spending $250+ on an intake so I decided to remove my airbox and build a custom heat shield. I did this because I like the sound without the airbox and the heat shield is my attempt to lessen the heat sink I would otherwise experience. I haven't decided what material or thickness to use yet, it will probably depend on what my dads friend has a available. So, here is the template I made. How effective do you guys think this will be? Is this design too extreme i.e will I actually be cutting off air flow to the intake? (if this is the case, I will make some cut outs in the bottom to direct some cold air). What material would you suggest I make it out of? What do you guys think.

Please keep all negative comments to yourself unless they are constructive. And don't mind that bolt the intake is resting on, I will be making a bracket to support it.

It' is pretty much the exact same design as the K&N FIPK. The filter sits in the same spot, the heat shield is open in the same area and shaped similarly. You might pick up a few HP but I'm sure nothing noticeable. I like seeing custom stuff like this though regardless of the results. Good luck

Cool, thanks man. I am honestly not concerned with gaining any hp (Although I'd gladly take it)...I'd just rather not lose any from having the box removed.

Looks good. As someone already mentioned; it follows the basic designs of K&N.

May I add some advice?
  • Close it off from the engine bay as much as you can.
like this [attachment=35432:1atfl.jpg]
  • If you can; use a heat reflective material (or at least line the exhaust manifold side with it).
    • simple heat reflectant tape works great on just about any material
  • It's hard to see but ensure the filter does not rub on the enclosure. (I assume the bolt is where a bracket will go to prevent this from happening)
  • Brace the filter. (again, that bolt is most likely going to solve this)
Also, check out S-Factors solution + another image (this is a for sale thread but this was what he came up with a while back).

good luck!

Trackforged offers something similar, just without the shielding from the engine.

Thanks a lot for the input guys. I will make that addition that you mentioned Matt. Do you guys think this will restrict too much air from cooling my motor? My dads afraid that that this might cause my engine to run too hot.

What do you guys think? I want to have this fabricated tomorrow and I wanna know if this will restrict air from the engine and cause it to run too hot.

Naw I wouldn't worry about that. It really shouldn't affect the motors cooling ability at all
