Default De-Cat

Hi Boys and Girls!

Been a while since ive posted on here as i sold my s2k. However i have just bought another one and want a bit more out of this one without changing it much (UK 2006 2.0L)force induction later down the line but for now i'm looking at removing the cat.
I've been doing a bit of research from the exsisting threads and they were great..learnt a lot. However they have led me to the number of questions i am now about to ask!

1. I've read that i really need a pipe with a device in it to prevent getting CEL..what is cell??? Is it some sort of fault code?
2. If i do de-cat it will i need to re-map the ecu?
3. Also what kind of power gain am i looking to get from removing the cat?

Thanks for your time peeps..look forward to hearing from ya?

Seb

search "test pipe" you will find lots of answers. Most test pipe do come with de foulers so you don't trip a CEL though.

Seb,

1.) CEL = Check Engine Light. Yes, it is a fault code. Most test pipes have built-in defoulers, i.e. extended mounting wells that your oxygen sensor screws into. It keeps the sensor further away from the exhaust gasses and prevents the ECU from detecting that there is no longer a cat installed (basically). On 00-05's this works just fine. 06+ mods are more difficult to fool. Hopefully an AP2 owner with test pipe experience can chime in here to help.

2.) No.

3.) 3-5 HP maybe (this will be debated). Test pipes unlock a bigger gain if you are FI, and/or if you have other supporting mods like intake/exhaust that are helping to "free up" the flow.

4.) You have a cool name.

Thanks Coolguy! Certainly cant be arsed pissing about with the ecu at this point! Just want a quick simple fix to get a few more horse power and this seems like the way. So you suggest maybe getting an induction kit? Shall i get rid of the big air box that the filter is in all together because i can see that being quite restrictive?!
haha Thanks pal

Hi jl56tc! I'm thinking this is a simulator to trick the ecu thinking the pipe hasnt changed or simply re-calibrating it so it allows the pipe change?

I have an AP2 with the Invidia test pipe w/ CEL fix. It won't fix the CEL as is, but the bung pre-welded onto the test pipe will easily fit one of the T1R CEL fix units to help out. Now, the CEL does blip every now and then for a few days, but it goes off on its own or can be reset by unhooking the battery. The gains are exceptionally good for the price of a test pipe and the sound is much better. Just hang onto your old cat incase you want to or need to go back to stock. Don't worry about a tune.
