Post Gear Shift Insulator

Anyone know what this is made out of? What is it's purpose?
I think it would be possible to make one myself, instead of pay Honda OEM.
Thanks.....WidiWidi

Some sort of soft foam rubber. It prevents hot air off trans from entering cabin. It turns to sticky, nasty mush. I replaced mine when I did the clutch a few years ago, and when recently doing audio system, noticed its disintegrated again.

Car used as 3 season dd. No track. New England, so not super hot climate.

I have a brand new one still in Honda bag waiting for when I do the next round of audio work and have to remove console cover.

I was planning to trace it and measure it in case it becomes unavailable, so I can diy make one.

Maybe I can post it as a template that can be printed out, for others to diy. Suggestions how to post and retain scale?

How do they do that for printing out bbk fitment templates?

When I pulled my center console to run sub-woofer wiring, my shifter insulation...like everyone else's was deteriorated into a crumbled, sticky mess. I believe it's purpose is sound deadening and possibly some transmission heat barrier to the console/cabin. I just went to Home Depot and bought some Frost King window/ac weather-stripping foam for $2. Worked just fine

The template isn't to scale (s2000Insulator2.pdf), but it could be if you want to provide the measurements from yours.
Depending on how accurate you want to be you could use millimeters or whatever.
Open it up in Adobe Reader. Put in the measurements. Send it back to me, and
I will make a template to scale. Sound good?
What material? And where were you going to purchase it from to make
a duplicate of it?

Yeah the factory insulation seems to fall apart after so many heat cycles. At $25 from Majestic I would hold it lasted longer.

I'm curious to see if anyone else has used a different foam to replace it.

What the others said ... from the condition of the original insulator it doesn't look like Honda used anything special. I picked up a chunk of foam and cut out my own from Home Depot, checked it recently and it hasn't gone to mush like the original part had.

I have digital calipers. I'll make some measurements and send back to you. Collaboration!

I just use a pipe foam insulator and just stuff it down there around the edges. Doesn't have to be perfect.
