Hey peeps,

I recently bought a J's racing single exhaust as my first mod. First impressions of this exhaust.

1. s2000 feels lighter.
2. Awesome exhaust note.
3. Got it second hand for cheap


However there is a downside i noticed after installing this single exhaust in comparison to the stock one. Information coming from the steering wheel feels reduced.

I guess this is due to the weight of the old exhaust and this helped the car feel more grounded, so when taking corners i could really push the car and it would hold well.

With the new exhaust i dont feel so confident, it always feels like the back is about to whip out.

I need advice on whether or not i should invest in some springs or coilovers, to lower the cars centre of gravity and keep it from lashing out. Or should i just go for an alignment (any suggestions on what alignment i need).

I want to be able to feel a lot of information from the steering wheel as i did before when i had the stock system installed.

Currently everything else is stock, im still using 16" bbs rims with falken zeix-512 tires. Car has done about 26,000 KM.

I haven't started tracking the car yet but i intend to this year.

Any advice would be great.

Hi,
it sound a little bit strange.
Still it is possible that, if stock exhaust is unbalanced to the rear, you could advice this problem to the back.
Still, even if we are talking of an important weight reduction, probably it is not so important to require a change in suspension.... otherwise this effect should be evident by simply removing the spare wheel.

any other advice?am i alone on this feeling of no steering response after changing to single exhaust pipe.

Can't see how dropping a little weight from the exhaust (30 lbs or 1% maybe?) will change the steering to the point you can feel it. Unless you're now making so much power you're overdriving your tires.

hmmm i thought stock exhaust is heavier than 30lbs. I dont know maybe its just some placebo effect im having, but seriously steering information feels lessened. Its when im just quickly shoft left and right, doesnt feel as sharp if you get what i mean.

If you were correct, each time you ran low on gas you would be FUBAR.

lol... maybe you need to take a look at your tires. going from the stock exhaust to a Js racing exhaust does net a pretty good amount of weight saving but it shouldn't make that big of a difference.

Yes it is, ~50 lbs, but I was guessing if the difference between the J's and OEM was about 30 lbs that would still only be 1-2% of curb weight. Daktrukie's comment about fuel is also relevant, gas weighs probably about 6-7 lbs per gallon, at a quarter tank you'd be 60 lbs lighter in the ass.

Check your tire pressure, maybe it's just coincidental you hit time for a refill when you changed out your exhaust.

Cool exhaust BTW, bet that baby sounds mean.
