Default larger throttle body for AP2

I see that some performance shops offer a larger throttle body. They say you can get some more power. Is that true or is it just marketing hype? Thank you.

Well its proven on the 00-05 for added response along with 5-6whp NA and about double FI with the manifold port matching, but they have a much smaller 62.5mm manifold opening. I'm not sure keeping the stock manifold at 69mm and then transitioning with a spacer to the larger mouth opening is going to be much of anything whp wise, however it should significantly effect throttle response as in less pedal movement equals more engine response/power. At WOT maybe something marginal if anything i'm thinking. Pretty expensive TB. Seems like with DBW throttle mapping you could simulate a lot of what this larger TB would do. But at some point it would seem you could have too much response at low throttle inputs and just make it more difficult to modulate smoothly. 80mm is a pretty big difference in that regard. Just my .02

Thank you s2000Junky for your detailed and well put response. I have been reading some past post about AP1 results but can not find a lot on the AP2.

Yeah the 06 DBW is a bit of a different beast due to the already much larger plenum opening, so I would be hesitant to jump on board without some good dyno data provided. Too bad there doesn't seem to be. If you have the money to play with and like experimenting, by all means we would all be curious to know.

Are you already tuned? I would get flashpro and a test pipe before dropping the money on a throttle body as the tune and test pipe will provide much larger gains for the money than any throttle body will.

They also sell a cheaper one that shows the difference from stock is 4mm.

You're gonna need a way to tune the larger throttle body anyway. A Gernby FlashPro road tune (a known, competent tuner) will provide startling midrange power and acceleration. This is done on the open road in your car, not a canned tune. Requires a high flow cat to get a 3600 rpm VTEC engagement that is simply wonderful.

Best money I spent on my '06.

Is Gernby around providing this service anymore? Last I heard he fell off the planet some time ago.

S2000Junky nailed it on the head.

I have all of the above done on my dbw s2k. The larger throttle body allows you to get to WOT earlier. It does make around town driving more jerky. In theory, it also smooths out airflow with the added spacer for a venturi effect. My butt dyno could not tell much -if any- power gains.

From information I have, Gernby is still tuning our cars albeit lacking a routine presence here. Hopefully a couple of guys who indicated to me he was tuning their cars will respond. There's at least another member doing this but I have no personal experience with him.
