lightweight flywheel pros and cons?

my buddy keeps telling me that a heavier flywheel is better for drag racing since each time you grab the next gear there is more umph smackin the clutch. he heard it from one sponsored drag racer so now thats all he swears by.

the basic he says, is two identical cars going straight all out, the one with a heavier flywheel will lurch a bit forward after each shift compared to the one with the lighter flywheel.

im going with an ap1 flywheel cuase i dont buy this crap and dont care even if there is slightly better for that, since i want all around better driving.

I have the ACT HD clutch and pressure plate with a fidanza 8lb flywheel. I absolutely love it, however it did take some getting used to. I have to rev the car up to about 2k rpm to get it off with out stalling in first.

I guess lightweight flywheel may not be that good for a city daily driven car with pretty bad traffic jam?

Im curious about that as well. only not so bad city traffic. but still lots of stop and go

This is my combo, AP1 flywheel, OEM Honda disc, Spec light weight (4 pounds less than stock) pressure plate, and AP2 transmission.
Basically this is an equivalent to a 10 pound flywheel. The setup is super easy to drive very smooth and no dramatic difference in RPMs rising fast or dropping fast. Peddle feel is a bit lighter than stock but grip is improved by 20 to 30% using the stock friction disc.

im running the act flywheel/clutch combo and as soon as you get used to it its fine the pressure is a bit heavier though. At first it did stall out but after a bit of time learning how to engage it its fine.. The engine "character" is more like a motorcycle now. Revs up quick and I find easier to rev match now...

Yes to all... and 8 pounds is what you want. You have a 14 now. I blip the gas once before releasing the clutch and then it smooths right out when I let it go for best modulation. Hardly any rev is needed, more on a hill. No issues with stalling at all. Its grabbier with the stock clutch and much easier on it too, saving the life. You actually can use less gas with the lighter flywheel if you are good because your engine is so much more responsive and delivers more trq to the wheel rather then to your clutch. It pulls faster. Its the people that don't have very good driving skills that feel like they have to over rev to keep from killing, this just isn't necessary. There are only benefits to running an 8 pound flywheel, no negatives. I'm a very happy Findanza customer for over 2 years.

I do it everyday, all 90miles. I say just learn to adapt and drive and its not even an issue. It took me all of a few drives to re adapt. I also say for an Ap1 to not even bother unless you go with the lightest available like the 8 pound Findanza. Your not getting the most benefit's otherwise. 9 pound Comptec is more expensive too. Someone makes an 11 pounder as well, this seems pointless.
