Default My LED retro project

I seem to have a problem, I love LEDs. There's something about the instant on/off . I also like to do custom mods as I feel it brings originality to the table since no one has done it before. So here is my LED retro project:

To start, I decided to put LED turn signals into my 04 retro'd tail lights. Its actually a pretty simple task to perform just might be a little nerve racking taking a dremel to 300+ dollar tail lights . I basically just cut out the back of the turn signal pods and epoxied in a 2.5" maxxima truck DOT approved LED. As for the hyper flash, I wired up a 20W 8ohm resistor in parallel with the LED. As you can see in the pictures below, it looks a little crude (and is irreversible) but you'll never see any of the wiring so I don't mind much.

The resistor is wrapped in a thermal resistant tape while being held down by the bracket that I have holding the light to the car. Here are some final pictures of it mounted on the car:

I also didn't stop there, I replaced the fairly crappy looking side markers with some nice LED turn signals from a VW beetle. It took a little trimming with a dremel (again) and a good amount of cussing on my part to get them mounted from behind but in the end they came out pretty nice . Don't mind the "crookedness," my s2000 emblem is crooked

And yes because both the side markers and the turn signals are DOT approved, they can be seen in direct sunlight

Special thanks to s2ki member Izn Trbl for helping me out on getting all the right supplies and to s2ki member Modifry for writing up the DIY for the VW beetle turn signals which can be found here:

Stay tuned for the front turn signals on AP1 head lights (unless I can find some AP2 headlights and just retro those as it would be a little easier)

It seems easier to just go to www.superlumination.com and buy the appropriate bulbs and LED flasher relay for the car. No wire slicing and no hacking up OEM parts. This method may not use "DOT approved" parts, but I'm sure it'll be just as bright if not brighter and I think it's better because everything has an OEM fit.

Actually this isn't true, those PnP LEDs are terrible to say the least. They are not bright enough to be seen in the daylight which is what separates the DOT approved LEDs to the "ebay" brand pnp bulbs.

That looks great bud! I am glad it all turned out great. I love the side turn signals.

Good luck with the headlights. I kinda hope you do not source a set of AP2's, just so I can see how the AP1's turn out LOL.

Any questions, let me know. But it looks as if you got everything handled pretty well.

Really? The LEDs you get at superlumination can be 3W Luxeons and also some bright assed SMT LEDs...like 50 mounted into one base. That can't be dim. Sure, the PnP LEDs from somewhere like Walmart are definitely going to be crappy, but these aren't really the same...

Like these are $30/bulb, not some APC junk...

Being bright and being bright inside of a reflector housing are completely different.

anyone know if that red ring around the turn signal can be converted to LED taillights and go on and off with the regular taillights so it'll have 4 lights?

It is just a red reflector ring to be compliant to DOT regulations.

You could however do as you say and put a ring of LED's behind there. But because of the way the red reflector ring reflects light, you may not be able to see the LED's very well while they sit behind it.

This is one of the things I will be doing if/when I build my next set.
