I ran my car last summer without a hood liner with no apparent issues. It looked nicer and I only re-installed it because it was pissing me off in the closet and the hood was a nice place to store it

Yeah what happened there Emil St-Hilaire?

I also had it off on a previous car, no problems for me though.

Oil sender fitting broke, spilling oil on the header, caught on fire;managed to put it out, only damage was a burnt hood liner...

Been running without liner since, but will replace it soon...

So it didn't "smoother" the fire?

There's no way that thing would ever smother any fire. In order to smother a fire, it would have to cut off the oxygen supply. The engine bay has too many holes, gaps, etc.
