Congrats on the purchase man, i'm sure you'll love her (picked up the same color/year a couple months ago and still in
haha).
I'd think twice on the not going 17's route, just from my own personal opinion I love the way mine felt after ditching the stock 16's for some. Of course it handled beyond great to start with, but even more in love now with its handling. Good luck with her though man, sounds like you've got some nice goodies planned for her.

17's on an MX5 will be a completely different story. On the S, some RE30's in 17" would be fine. I and many others run 18's on the S. As long as their light (I have O.Z. Ultralaggera's) you'll be fine.
As far as not wanting more grip because you want to slide.. How the car is set-up (tyre size, alignment, braces, etc.) can get you sideways and under control vs simply going for no traction at all. I would "suggest" you consider grip but with a nice stiff set up vs tiny tires and no traction at all. Better safe than OOps, theres a ditch!
For weight reduction. Pretty much been summed up here, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned the spare tire/jack/tools, etc. If your running brand new tires and or have roadside assistance, really no need for the "doughnut"
Because the S will be your DD, Keep in mind when shedding weight... Certain parts are made heavy for a reason. ie; the header keeps engine noise down vs a thin walled performance header you will hear more valve noise etc. A ti exhaust will sound much different than a ss exhaust, etc. etc.
Otherwise I think you have the research before doing part figured out which that alone puts you ahead of the game.
Welcome to S2KI and best of luck with your new S.
Cheers

thanks for the advice I'm not much worried about the noise. the main reason I want to stick to 16s is because the radius also matters as well as the weight. how about getting 17s back and 16 front? it appears it's nearly impossible to find 16s with the original width and offsets any ideas? the only ones that appear to be possible are TE37s but I prefer the look of CE38s
