Default NFR AP1 Mods

Soon to be 2001 AP1 owner in California.

I keep flip flopping on ways to mod the car. It's an NFR 2001 AP1, single owner with 70k miles.

I have roughly $4500 for mods.

The challenge is staying carb and noise legal in California.

I am tossing around the idea of keeping it looking stock and supercharging with a comptech supercharger kit.

I am also tossing around the idea of getting the rims painted black, putting in 4.77 gears, the yellowbox speedo converter and hks hi power dual exhaust.

I have to stay under 95db to not get pulled over by CHP and they will pop my hood to check for illegal mods so I am looking for performance over stock form in a "hidden" (aside from black rims that draw attention) fashion.

I also want to include maintenance in those $4500 in funds, I want to have a transmission fluid change and motor oil change, also brand new performance summer tires.

Any advice from people who have been here and done that?

Barely found hardtopguys website.

http://hardtopguy.com/store/226.html

This is a good price for a new kit! How much would it cost for an install, tune, and I heard that a piggyback fuel management system is needed to stay carb legal. I heard that the greddy emanage kit is the best one that is a piggyback one. So if the install price is reasonable, I could see myself getting this and being happy with it, keeping the stock look.

Is it just me, or is the cost of it $30,000?

is this your first S2000? i'd recommend just driving it in stock form for a while and learning the car. you'll start to see things you might want to change about the car and develop a better idea about where you want to go with the mods. i wouldn't just come out the gates with something big like a supercharger.

That is pretty steep for a supercharger

I don't know why I wasn't getting notifications for this but thank you all for your responses. I will drive it stock for now with some good tires.

Buggering the car with black wheels will normally identify the car and you with that "class" of people who street race and exceed the speed limit. OEM wheels tend to not draw that attention (even if we're in that same "class".) 17" AP2 wheels and OEM size summer tires are a nice addition. These are routinely for sale here, some with tires.

A quick "mod" is the CARB-legal K&N FIPK air induction system. Actually adds a couple of horsepower but the induction noise is worth the price regardless. Mine came with a "CARB" sticker I put on for no reason at all since I'm in Ohio. Installation for AP1 and AP2 differs slightly and there may be slightly different versions. Look in the "for sale" area as guys sell these frequently as they come off if fitting a supercharger. CARB legal superchargers are out there but will kill your budget completely even if used. This can wait.

The Tanabe Medalion Touring Dual exhaust seems to add a bit of power and a slightly more aggressive sound to my car too and is rated at under 93dBA. Mine is under 94dBA behind a Berk high flow cat which I doubt is CARB legal but it's inside the OEM heat shields and passes Ohio emissions.

Supercharging needs a different or modified ECU and I don't know the CARB status on those. My '06 is tuned via a FlashPro and the device is prominently labelled "for off road use only."

Finally (whew!) doing all the mods right away takes away much of the hobby portion of owning this car. After doing a complete fluid change, alignment, and valve adjustment what's left to do if it's all done? It's a slippery slope after that to lowering the car just for looks, painting the wheels green, debadging, etc.
