Smile Sound System Upgrade

Hello. I'm interested in upgrading the sound system in my '00 and would like some opinions. What set-ups are you using and what products do you suggest? Thank you!

Perhaps look in the electronics forum. There are thousands of posts on this topic. What people use and what they recommend varies considerably depending on a person's goals.

Current Setup:
Stinger Elev8 with digital out in the factory location
Modifry DCI
JL Audio VX1000/5i in the spare tire well
JL Audio DRC-205 in the center console for bass control and overall volume/program control
JL Audio Stealthbox in the rear trunk cavity
PPI 365CS front speakers (old A/D/S rebranded as PPI)
PPI 355CS rear speakers (old A/D/S rebranded as PPI) in S-Pods
Entire car sound deadened

The VXi amp takes the L+R signals, mixes them, reduces them by 15-20 dB, delays them, and then sends them to the rear speakers. This helps provide much needed fill/volume, but doesn't smear the stage.

Tim

Thats a nice setup, but I chose a different route:

SKAR 5 channel amp mounted in the spare tire area (I used one of the same mounting boards as Tim above. It has plenty of room for crossovers or whatever future needs I may have).
10" subwoofer in custom footwell box. Fits in the passenger side footwell. This location has the advantage of NO RATTLES and is the best location for a subwoofer in an S2000 (in my opinion).
The car had already been upgraded with a Pioneer Bluetooth headunit with the Modifry DCI unit (allows use of the factory radio controls to the left of the steering wheel) and new 2way door speakers.
I also applied sound deadener material in the doors, but not to the extent that Tim did his! After all, it is a convertible and there's only so much benefit you will get from that.

Here is a link to what I did for NVH insulation. I was shocked how much it impacted and improved the sound system. The doors give great bang for the buck.

I was going to change my speakers but found the stock ones were good enough after the insulation and especially when I put in a Sony Headunit with 45 watts of power. I now hardly ever open the radio door as I stream and control the HU with my phone (mounted on a flex shaft to pax seat)

I went with the Modifry for plug and play and to use the dash interface. Works great, would do it again.

Kind of depends of what your goals are but I second replacing the head unit first and see how you like that. The OEM unit sucks balls and can barely power the stock speakers.

Start with the head unit and corresponding modifry dci and see where that gets you. Modifry also sells composite speaker rings if you want to upgrade the front door speakers. I highly recommend Darkside sub enclosures, https://www.darksidesubs.com.
