Yeah it's plastic not chrome. Sand paper would work and did for me. I just painted it gloss black and looked really nice. I have a stock one again now as I later covered it in suede and got sick of it.

OMG dont use sand paper! just take some nail polish remover and cotton balls. It takes it off super quick and leaves it shiny as hell! Dont know why they ever painted it.

I think you are talking about something else.
You can remove the dull coating over the chrome like plastic that way. Don't think that works to take the chromed plastic off though.

im confused.. someone help me out here guys.

i've had my 03 since it had 32k on it and my shift surround is pretty much the color of the dash bezel...

i have seen some ap1s that looked like they had a chrome applique stuck on...

so the shiny shit is UNDER the dull coating? i had thought mine used to be chrome-y and the previous owner ****ed it up or something and it ended up dull.

the chrome-y consoles look so much better imo than my dull grey..

^Only the 2000 and 2001 models have the shiny coating underneath that dull finish.
Should have been like that stock imo.

Well nail polish did not work for me, sand paper was taking to long, so my genius roomate said to put it in the oven to bake it off, it did not work (started bubbling), so I sanded it the best I could and painted it gloss black, then lightly sanded it to dull the finish, it looks pretty good, not as good as I was hoping for, but everyone else does not even notice

I am interested in doing this and would like to see some pictures and information on the method that was used.
