Default What's It Mean To Remove Windshield Tape ?

When talking about colours of Hardtops I often see replies mentioning the removal of windshield tape. What is the windshield tape and what's involved in removing it. What colour is under the tape if any ?. Thanks for any replies.

Black windshield frame is actually black tape over paint. Underneath it's the same color as the factory color.

Holy crap, I never knew that, thanks for the pics too, that looks really cool.

So if you get a colour matched hardtop you peel the windshield tape to reveal the body colour. If you have a black hardtop you leave the tape in place.

I have a hardtop on the way, I'll have to decide which way to go with it.
thanks for the quick replies. much appreciated.

Do you have to go back to the dealership to get the tape, like is it something that they sell there or can any body shop reapply it?

i have heard a lot of ppl (me included) complain with the quailty of the paint that is under the tape. the tape came off with some ease and patience, but there are some noticable fadded/unfinished spots by the driverside

my 08 came without tape and the paint looks fine. maybe the ones with tape weren't finished as nicely.

I think 07+ had no tape installed

My 04 had tape and I removed it to find several of the sanded spots - I had it repainted recently. But I think it looks TONS better with a color matched hardtop.
