Default Cheapest way to add 20 wbhp

I would like about 10% more power i.e. about +24 at the crank and +20bhp at the wheels to my stock 2002 . I know there are lots of posts asking about the cheapest way to add 40 or 60 bhp, but my cars a daily driver and I like it with stock suspension and 16" rims and so I'm not seeking massive gains and mid range torque is preferable to peaky power.

I do not want any CEL or UK MOT issues so a decat/test pipe is NOT an option and this may rule out some EMS too.

You can achieve that by doing the standard intake, exhaust, and high flow cat. I got those gains coming from stock to K&N FIPK, PLM header, Berk HFC, and Invidia Q300 exhaust. I then added a basic Apexi Neo piggyback and lowered my VTEC to unlock a good chunk of mid-range power and smooth out the power band.

Test pipe and tune. As long as the test pipe has the cel fix you should be fine. Piggy back tuner like apexi neo or emanage.

It won't pass a UK MOT and so isn't an option for me. On the other hand, I'd consider an HFC as long as it's MOT complaint.

Ah I assume they do a visual inspection or something? If they just do an obd scan you should be fine. You will have a hard time truly getting that kind of power bump without a tune. The tune and lowering vtec is a must. I gained 15-20hp throughout the midrange with lowering vtec.

They stick a sensor in the exhaust pipe which will fail cars without a working CAT and I could do without the hassle of swapping parts over every year.

Ah that will do it. Not sure a house high flow cat would even pass. Well then do bolt ons and a neo. You won't be able to lower vtec much if any but the car will feel better.

Yeah I'd do a test pipe and just swap on the OEM cat to pass your MOT.

I got a Berk high flow cat and it passed the sniffer test we have to do every year here in Sweden without any problems.
Just make sure to drive it hard before the test so it gets really hot.
