you can get 12lbs wheels and a great tire selection because all the spec miatas run 15's
What width?

Desmond Regamaster EVOs (and the all black Spoon version, the SW388s) are 11.9lbs front, 12.9 rear for 7" and 8" widths respectively. They fit with no modifications, so you'd have to go lighter or wider (or significantly cheaper I suppose) to sell me. Are you talking 12 lbs for 10" rims or something?

yeah tire availability is the issue.
Looks like Dunlop has some good 16" options in 260mm width.
If someone would make a 275 30 17 that would work well, but I've yet to see anything in that size.

this is interesting, are you going to lower the cars suspension more reducing travel or are you saying that with the shorter profile wheels and tires the car will just sit lower.

also were you running out of travel due to bump stops or the tire contacting the frame?

was running out of travel with the 18" 285 30 BFG R1, 1000lb/inch front springs on clubsports. The dampers have lots of stroke left, it's just a clearance issue.

I was referring to the shorter tire lowering the complete vehicle plus the additional space above allowing to lower the body.

I just compared the BFG R1 285 30 18 to the V710 285 30 18. The V710 is 5/16" shorter but more interesting it is 7/8" shorter at the outer edges. It has a much more curved profile, and may provide enough clearance. I will mount up a pair tonight on the 18*10 +35 advans and see if I can reach target ride height and maintain 1.5" of compression travel.

The CSP miata guys have been doing this for a long time. They would run 13" wheels with a shorter tire, it would lower the car and still have plenty of clearance and shock travel. Hoosier has a 255-13 tire that works great for that principle.

In Andrews case he might want to consider a Bogart wheel. Get a 15x10 and run the 275/35-15 Hoosier. It's what the other half of CSP runs. The custom wheels would allow you to get the correct offset and bolt pattern.

Spec Miatas are all 15x7, which is why the wheels are so light. Actually you can get a 15x7 all the way down to 9lbs if you are willing to pay for it, but it's not SM legal. Rules require a minimum weight of 12 or 13 pounds to avoid people breaking the bank on wheels.

It's pretty hard to find a 15 wider than 7 or 7.5 with the right bolt pattern that isn't custom.
