Something doesn't quite jive, though -- Honda added a bunch of reinforcements and 17" wheels and the curb weight only went up by 25 pounds?

It's probably easiest to think of the reduction gear as a black box between the transmission and the differential.

Incidentally, would anyone who didn't fail second year calculus be willing to take the engine output chart at http://flex.com/~slickyv/s2k6.jpg, mix in the new gearing data, and make an '03-vs.-'04 chart similar to this one?

For comparison of 2000-2003 vs. 2004 cars, here's the speed in gears, using tire circumferences from the Hoosier web site:

I'd be happy to (already have the spreadsheet made), if someone wants to provide me a numerical table of the torque values every 500 rpm from 2000 - 8000 rpm off the chart. Otherwise it will have to wait a day or two until I have time. BTW - the torque scale on the chart is a bit sketchy, the numbers don't line up with the hash marks of the scale.

I read both the horsepower and torque values off of the chart, then used one to calculate the other as a cross-check. The results were pretty close (within a few percent), so I'm confident that the following is an accurate representation of what's shown on the chart:

rpm -- torque
2000 - 129
2500 - 137
3000 - 145
3500 - 149
4000 - 146
4500 - 148
5000 - 150
5500 - 152
6000 - 158
6500 - 162
7000 - 162
7500 - 161
8000 - 157

Who knows how accurate the chart itself is, though...

Oof: Windscreen, you place top speed in 2nd for the 2004 at almost exactly the same speed as a 5-speed Miata. I can guarantee that the S2000 will hit the rev limiter more often... Did you use 8000 as the limit? Where is the actual rev limit on the current model, at redline or slightly above? On the Miata, the rev limiter is around 7200RPM with a 7000 redline.

The rev limit on the new engine is substantially above the redline. Varying reports put it at 8300 and 8400 rpm.

That would put the top of 2nd right around 60 mph on stock tires, and it probably _just_ get's there for magazine testing purposes.

Hmm. I'll have to go back and check, but I believe at least one of Car and Driver and Road & Track explicitly states in their test procedures that they don't exceed the car's redline.

That's moot for us, of course, since we share no such compunction.
