2006 S2000 Challenge series
As promised, this is what Aaron and I have come up with: (Changes in bold italics)
-------------------------------------
NOVICE Classes:
The NOVICE classes are open to S2000 drivers having attended fewer than 5 SV event-days AND fewer than 10 track days of any kind (including formal racing schools), as of Jan. 1, 2006. Classing rules are identical to the STOCK and MODIFIED COMPETITION classes, and will recognize 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for each NOVICE class. Note that UNLIMITED cars compete together regardless of driver experience.
COMPETITION Classes:
COMP classes are open to all S2000 drivers regardless of experience level. So, a driver eligible for NOVICE may elect to run in the COMPETITION class, but must make a final decision (NOVICE or COMP) by April 1, 2006. Regardless of how many track days a NOVICE driver attends in 2006, he or she will remain in the NOVICE class for the year. Conversely, regardless of how few days a NOVICE attends, once declared as a NOVICE, he or she will be ineligible to compete as a NOVICE in future seasons.
Classing Rules for NOVICE and COMPETITION:
STOCK:
Philosophy: A STOCK car is essentially a "street car" as the term is broadly understood. Therefore, the allowed STOCK modifications fall into three broad categrories:
1) Those that are common among street-driven cars, and are believed to provide little or no performance advantage on track (e.g. exhaust, chassis bracing, cosmetic body kits)
2) Those that are considered "minimal preparations" for a track event (e.g. alignment, brake pads/fluid, certain engine cooling mods)
3) Safety equipment -- anything short of a full roll cage is allowed here as long as it improves a driver's safety on the track.
4) Up to 50 points are allowed from the MODIFIED category; e.g. intake+header+Volks+rollbar = 10+5+25-15 = 25. (*R-Comp tires immediately bump a car to modified.)
The following are considered "stock" modifications and are assessed no points:
Tires: up to 275 width rear tire, 120+ treadwear
Alignment

I still probably won't make any of these events, but it is amusing to see where my car would be rated. I would be in the stock class except for running on RA1s. So can you run some laps on street tires and some laps on R-compounds and enter both classes?

You and the North West gang should pick one or two of the weekend events to come down and participate with us.

I know it's a bit of a haul, but you'll get two days in on some great tracks. Not only that, but you'll be able to impress us California/Nevada drivers with how quickly y'all can adapt to our challenging road courses.
Well now, thinking of running stock class. If I'm reading that right, I can run any street legal tire with a wear rating of 120 or higher on my stock wheels, right? If so, what's the consensus on the fastest non-R tire. I bet this has been discussed before, but with the search not working....

As far as tire width goes:
the car has always been thought to be limited in its ass-end. I think you should leave it at 275 rear limited and if someone wants to run 275 on front also, let 'em.
255 is too narrow for the rear (ass end). The car needs 275's, especially if you're running a $6000 suspension system.

Rob (Maxrev) has been running 255 all around, and has been the fastest.
I would like to do that. Don't know if I'll work it out or not. Usually the deal is to find 2-3 days in a row in order to make it worthwhile. There's some folks I often drive with trying to set up a couple days at Laguna in Feb (with Trackmasters and CFRA, I think).

V710s belong in the same category as Hoosiers IMHO.
good point! V710s are now in the same category as Hoosiers.
