My driving skills really took off when I started running time trials. Competition pushes you to improve and you're hanging out with guys that are a lot better than a time trial novice. Most will share knowledge with a fledgling rookie. You learn what modifications are important and which are fluff. Do it. Just do it.

You guys who live near a track where you can do time trials are lucky. There's nothing up here for hundreds of miles aside from small oval tracks.
