Advantages of front & rear spoilers?

Are the items primarily for looks or do they serve a real purpose? The clearance on the front spoiler looks like it could be an issue in day-to-day driving. The rear spoiler doesn't appear to add a great deal of wing. Anyone know for sure, or have strong feelings one way or other?

As this is the "Racing and Competition" forum, I wanted to point out that the spoilers are not legal for SCCA A-stock autoX as they are dealer installed accesories not available installed directly from the factory...

There are different level of racing and the spoilers may be legal to install in your class.
SCCA Road racing is much better than autoX.

I would have to say that if you where going to do a lot of track days that a rear spoiler like the Mugen one will do a lot. I would have to also say that the front spoiler works also. If you where just doing AutoX then probably would not do much. It does not take much to make a difference when it comes to aero!

I'd figure even extending a lip straight down towards the ground could have good effects, if not for downforce. I'd take a guess that the turbulent air coming directly at the car would get pushed outwards and away from the car.
This should reduce the turbulent are from underneath the car. Just an opinion, am I close?

If you want lots of downforce, put the top down! The windshield will act like a giant spoiler. The S2000 is significantly faster at high speed with the top up, though.
Here's a silly autoX rules question: If the top is down, is the Rick Hesel windscreen an illegal aerodynamic aid?

As a random aside, I installed a front spoiler & rear skirt on my old Miata (from the R package), and it improved high speed stability significantly. IIRC, that setup was actually designed by Mazda in the wind tunnel.
Anyone know how we could find out if the S2k's aero add-ons are truly just ornamental? I don't want to add them if they're not functional.
Scott.
