Default Any updates on reclassification?

Just picked up the latest GRM and noted that the proposed structure (which the editors noted might as well be final) has the S2K with the C4, Boxster S, M Coupe, etc.

The SCCA board has stated that they'd wait until after the National championship...

I'm willing to bet that the M coupe, M roadster, C4 will all be with the S2000. Whether or not they move the Boxster will be determined after Nationals.

Maybe you have heard or haven't heard that at the Peru test and tune earlier this month gave the chance for Jason Saini and GH Sharp to swap cars. Unfortunately by the time GH had his shot at the mistress she was on worn tires, however Jasons' comments were that the Boxster 2.7 and the S2000 are well matched for each other.

Only time will tell.

Mark Daddio said (and I quote):

"The S2000 will still be the car of the class - even against the Boxster S."

He still feels that nobody has yet fully explored the full potential of the S2000.

I imagine that he would be one of the few who would could said that (about any car) and know what he's talking about.

Jason,

I hear you and can't make a judgement on my own - but can only pass on what I've heard from people that I think would know.

I do know that at least 2 other Evolution school instructors have/want to ditch their AS Boxsters for S2000's at this years Nationals. Pat Salerno is the one that you might not be aware of.

Nick Leverone wanted to take mine (he's not the other one from above). For those that don't know he's an Evolution Dial-In instructor.

Jason,

You mention wheel and tire options. Do you feel like the bigger (and wider I assume) wheels and tires available to the Boxster present an advantage in auto-x? Obviously more weight is detrimental, but what about wider tires, a more stable contact patch (thanks to a wider wheel) and a stiffer sidewall? Any impressions on those factors after driving Sharp's car?

I didn't actually drive the car, but I was there and talked with GH and Rob Falkner about wheel options on the Boxter.

Std it comes w/16x6 and 16x7 wheels.
Option 1 is 17x7 and 17x8.5. This costs $2500.
Option 2 is 18x7.5 and 18x9. This costs $4200.

No one runs with the std wheels. Most Boxter drivers have been running option 1. In repeated testing, Rob & GH found that option 2 (18" wheels) was .4 - .6 sec faster than the 17" wheels.

That's just a heck of a lot more rubber than the S2000 has and the car only weighs ~200 lbs more. In a section of the course (long fast right hander) where Jason & I had to modulate the throttle to keep it under control, GH could just plant his foot and it stuck.

Make of it what you will, but the development of the Boxter isn't complete either as shown by the improvement from just changing wheels.

I guess I'm confused by this. Hasn't the Boxster been out since '97 (engine bump from 2.5 to 2.7 in '00)? Chassis and wheel options have remained the same, the factory sport suspension has been available since the intro year. Certainly the 2.7 adds power, but I wouldn't think that would affect chassis setup much. The S is newer, but still a lightly modified version of the original chassis.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm surprised folks haven't been able to fully tweak the 2.5/2.7 Engine 16", 17" 18" wheel, sport or standard suspension non S Boxsters in 5 model years...
