Aluminum melts at a little over 1200 degrees F, at which point you should have a nice bright orange glow going on. It also softens at lower temperature. It's possible that the XR2 pads are rated beyond 1200 degrees and they don't want you to limit the effective range by including shims which could melt before the pads exceed their maximum operating temperature.
