Cracked Rotors

Rotors are consumables. Like oil and gas, replacing them as they wear is just a normal thing. At $60 each, it's not worth the time for me to have them cut. Beside which, I don't want to lose any thermal mass.
Mild crazing, you know heat cracks where the pad rubs, don't bug me. If they get any bigger, I'll replace them on the spot. Maybe use them as street rotors. It's cheap insurance versus totalling a car. If I was driving on the streets I wouldn't be as anal. When I drive on the track, where even a small lift can cause a spin, I don't take any chances at all. Lets look at the math. $120 for new rotors, $18,000 for an older used S2000. Even if you let your insurance cover the wreck one time (which I've done) the extra cost of insurance would pay for new rotors in a month.
I did a full 4 day's worth of HPDE this weekend at VIR (thur-sunday). With XP10's on the front, and GS610 fluid, I went all weekend with no fade and no brake problems at all. I inspected the rotors each day and can can say they're in fine shape for now (heat cracks but, barely noticable). I may have bent the inner pads but, I haven't taken them out to check yet.
I want to have safe fun. I don't want to have to call my wife again and tell her I totalled a car or have to tow a car back 5 hours to my house. I spent more in gas at the events then a set of rotors would cost. I agree, manage your risks. I don't think brakes are where you should skimp though.

I cracked my left front rotor the after the 3rd session on Friday. That rotor had 6 track days on it. It was a hairline crack that got much larger by Sat morning for the drive home.

Haha you caught me. I was in the black civic. I spoke to you a couple times. I'm a prospective S2000 owner. Honda's are my favorite cars and the S2000 is what I think I'm going to upgrade too.
I came here to find out all I could about them.
I got a ride in my instructors turbo RX-7 and decided I wanted some FR action too. He did this thing on the climbing S's where he would add power every time he turned the wheel. It completely settled the rear of the car. I was impressed.

He spun out right in front of me at turn 10 (after the climbing S's). I was sliding sideways on the downhill off camber part trying not to hit him. His car was unhurt luckily. Looks like he just gave it too much gas.

This may seem like a silly question, but why do S2000 rotors crack? Are they too small for the mass/speed of the car? My track car is a 2400lb supercharged MR2 and I have used the same rotors (and pads, as a matter of fact) for about 8 track days. Half on street tires, half on Kumho Victoracers. The pads are about 50% worn and have ~30,000 street miles too. Rotors look perfect.
I understand the S should go through pads more often but I haven't heard of cracking rotors on any other cars at the various track events I've been to.
