We got the car for ~$300 and somehow we're already into the whole project (including registration fees) for $5000 and the cage only cost $1100.

I'm reserving final judgment until after next weekend, but I'm pretty sure I would rather have used that $12-1400 to upgrade the suspension on my motorcycle. It's funny tho, my wife is convinced I'll have a blast.
$5000 for a car that at the end of a event can offer you $500 and you have to take it? That's very crappy.

most numbers I've heard are about 2500 to build a decent car. $5k seems crazy.

Not every car is lucky enuf tho to have a bolt in cage available for it. Remember too the race is almost 17hrs. thats a long time on an old car and usually you end up fixing stuff you know would otherwise break.

I'm just paying a few hundred bucks for a seat in someone else's car/

$5k is not just for the car - that's all in. Race entry fees ($1150), food when we flew down to LA to work on the car, spares, etc.

Not to mention that the event organizers can unilaterally decide to destroy your car if you do something they don't like. If I spent thousands of dollars and countless hours building a car and then someone had it crushed on a whim, I'd go ballistic.

Hey Steve - when it comes to "The People's Curse" I have to say that if we voted for a car/team to be crushed they were really a$$holes that deserved it.

I've only seen the "buyout" clause exercised once. A super clean 600 SEC that probably could have been parted out for $10K

The owner claimed not to mind.

IIRC only 1 car gets destroyed and it's the one that is voted on by the competitors and they give you your $500 back
