What's the closest driving school to Virginia Beach? Because whenever I lose the rear end, I have to let all the way off the gas and it takes me like 2 compensations (turning of the wheel) to correct, and it's close. I don't think it's too bad, since it is only my first year driving, but there's gotta be a better way. I've been told that since it's rear wheel, if you give it more gas, it'll straighten up, never got the nuts to try that

Hi Jon-

Err- whoever told you that is DEAD wrong. That only works on front wheel drive. If you did that with rear wheel drive you'll loop it out- guaranteed, every single time.

Try modulating your throttle better and being smoother.

How many compensations is a good amount, is 2 good? Or is 2 good only if you keep on the gas?

Not that I have experience, but when riding in others' cars, it seemed that if the rear came out you could compensate by counter-steering just once.

If the rear wheels are spinning due to too much throttle, back off a little. If the tail steps out while cornering, good luck!

I suggest you check out BSR's classes at Summit Point Raceway. It's in West Virginney and would be a few hours from the beach, but might be worth your while. Plus, you get to toss around huge police-package Caprices on a skid pad.

Or you could attend the Car Guys classes at Summit Point, or VIR. VIR is probably a few hours closer to you.

The car guys also run the wet skidpad, with the advantage that you run your own car. It's a fantastic way to learn car control.

I've found the best way to learn how to drive your car at the limit, is to drive "your" car at the limit with an instructor. (Not a school car.)

The key is to be QUICK (but smooth) with your reaction. A single quick counter with a slight reduction in throttle will do it. I recommend getting your front wheels back on "line" as soon as you can after the counter.

Remember that if you ease off the throttle too much, the car will gain traction abruptly and you will end up in an over-correct situation.

Absolutely, DO NOT add throttle in this scenario. I recommend driving school(s) as well, and begin the learning process with a book such as "Speed Secrets" by Ross Bentley. This is an excellent guide to the fundamentals of driving and there is a lot to be learned from his experience.
