I've never read or seen of those other books, but how do they compare to Ayrton Senna's Principles of Race Driving?
I bought my copy years and years ago. It's not a huge volume, and it's pretty basic stuff. After the usual stuff (driving position, types of corners, etc), he goes through some exercises that he did, plus recommendations on diet and such. Filled with plenty of pictures of him in the various McLarens he drove. I can't remember the price, but I'm sure it was substantially less than $145. More in the $40-50 range, if that, but like I said, it was years ago when I bought it.

One of the Speed Secrets books is all about exercises (mental and physical) and similar driver-tuning things.
If you can only afford one ...
... you might have picked the wrong hobby
But I'll +1 on speed secrets. It's the most comprehensive, easy to read beginner book I've read. and read. and read again.
It might even pay off if I ever get my car on a track.

Pick what you will, but do yourself a big favor and keep re-reading them! I pretty much have all the books mentioned above...my copy of the Senna book still has the $22 sticker from Borders...Different things will start to make sense as your experience and skills grow. I can remember back when things I first read did not make much sense until after I first took a car on a track, and some things started to become clear...more things cleared up when go-karting (like have a good comfortable driving position where you are naturally secured vs. bracing yourself and see the effect on your lap times)
So at a minimum, get some of the above mentioned books, then
1) Read
2) Drive
3) Repeat from step 1!
Enjoy!

Okay, I took some people's advice and ordered M&M, which arrived today. It looks like all Greek to me.... just complex equations and multidimentional plots
. I already found going faster intellectually challenging. I guess this one will make my bookshelf look good.
