Default Fuel level gauge alternatives?

During my last trackday I inadvertently ran out of fuel. Where my gauge was showing 60% remaining, it was actually on empty. Luckily, I was able to putt around the last few laps and make it to the pits to refuel.

Has anyone attempted to install a better fuel level sender or make better use of what we have? I tried replacing the gauge alone with an Autometer unit, but it was often erratic and didnt work right.

That's bizarre. Was the float stuck on the fuel filter sock?

The stock fuel gauge is buffered, so the fuel level will also lag behind severely. Not sure if trying to get an aftermarket fuel sender with the stock gauge is going to work properly.

Alternatively, you could get an "instantaneous" FLI reading via OBD2. At least, I know the 06+ cars have this.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I'm read here that the fuel level is actually calculated by the ECU based on the driving conditions. Since I'm supercharged and always flogging, maybe the ECU didnt know how to deal with that??

I'll have to research FLI reading via OBD, never heard of that.

Looking at the wiring diagram, I don't see any connection on the ECU for the fuel pump level sender. The only fuel related connections to the ECU are for fuel pressure and for the fuel pump relay.

It may be calculated in the gauge cluster 'ECU'

Are you 06+? I'm not sure if it's a 06+ thing, but it fluctuates like CRAZY when driving, and settles when it's still, and FLI literally stands for fuel level indicator..

I have an '06 and my gauge is slow to move, sometimes I can go over 100 miles before the gauge starts to move and the next time it drops at 40 miles. The float gets stuck on something in my car about 1/3 of the time and then it drops like a rock. Oh and the last 1/4 tank goes in less than 35 miles, always . LOL...

yea my gauge is always off on track also a 06+ and up. I know if I hit a quarter of a tank on track then I will run out of gas in the nest few miles so I always got to go refuel before then.
