Default Hankook Z-211

I found a good price on these and was thinking of getting them for my son's Civic for track days. I'm told it's the designated tire for the spec Miata series. Don't know if its a good tire or not. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!

A bit stickier than the Toyo RA1, but do not heat cycle near as well.

For the record, the RA-1 is the national spec tire for Spec Miatas; the Hancook is regional spec in some places.

In any event, I've driven my Spec Miata with both RA-1s and the Hancooks. The Hancooks are fine tires. I haven't driven them enough to know whether they last, but they stick just fine.

And unshaved (6/32, as opposed to 8/32 for the RA-1), they do well in the rain, like the RA-1.

They are treadwear 50, while the RA-1 is 100, FWIW.

FYI, treadwear can't be compared across different manufacturers; it is only relevant when comparing two tires from the same manufacturer.

The Hankook is a good tire and if cheap enough I'd say it's worth a try but it might not outlast a set of RA1s and that's where your "savings" go to hell.

I understand that, which is why I said "FWIW." It may be worth nothing, but it is a significant difference in raw numbers.

FWIW the RA1 used to say 50 on it, but was changed to meet the arbitrary regulations of a certain racing series. The compound didn't change, just the number printed on the side of the tire. The number is pretty meaningless other than as a general idea of performance tire vs 80,000 mile warranty special.

Not SpecMiata, but the MX-5 cup series (being shown on SpeedTV this month)
