Default Hans Device vs Isaac System

Comparison.

Isaac System <link>.

If I ever put a harness in the S2000, I'd get the Isaac.

Interesting concept, but I am a little concerned about the angle that the damper has in the driver photos. The forces will be in a more horizontal plane (flexion-distraction) while the damper, from the photos, is fairly vertical.

Almost, but not quite. What you're neglecting to take into account is that the body will likely be pitched forward, with the forces "pulling" the head towards the front of the car and the damper will be much closer to working in the plane of the forces involved than it looks while at rest.

Al: Yes, I've seen those before and would certainly consider it for my car when it's ready for a harness.

There have been long, heated discussions about the relative merits and disadvantages of the HANS, Isaacs and Hutchens systems on the Spec Miata board.

Here's one link about a discussion with a HANS engineer and subsequent "debate".

And here's a link to an issue one driver had with visibility constraints.

Check these out to start and then search around on that site for other compelling threads.

The HANS just attained SFI certification: http://www.hansdevice.com/catalog.ph...24&item_id=135

And a response from a Hubbard/Downing (HANS makers) employee about this quote from the site you posted.

Isaac myth:
[I]Other products produce a range of head loads depending on how tightly they are worn

Interesting replies. Thanks for the links. I wonder how the Isaac would work if another car hit the Isaac equipped on the driver's (or passenger's) side, thus producing a lateral acceleration force. I do not yet know enough about the Hans to determine if such a force would also be of concern, but the Hans does seem to be 'beefier'.

Quite the heated discussions on the M boards, huh!

i just started using my HANS

i spun, stayed on track, but then donuted around and encountered restricted lateral vision as i positioned myself perpendicular to track.
I'll be able to anticipate this in future and reposition car parallel and use mirror. was in formula car so can't really add more mirrors, but probably will add mirrors on S

i'll also try the allowable extra tether length

i initially tried 20 degree model and didnt like fit in my car

i then got 30 degree model and turns out it is additionally narrower in the back which i believe helps fit better. they don't mention that this difference is present on the web site or any other info i've seen

fit perfect for formula car, yet to drive S with it

I want to order something now but haven't had time to do the research and can't decide. Should I flip a coin as either is better than none, or is there a consensus building somewhere?

Richard, I am not sure of the multiuser aspect of the Hans, but since Kyle and I both drive the S, it seems the multiuse of the Isaac would be ideal for us. Additional mounts for the other helmet is all that is needed, I think. Hans is good for Nascar, but may be more than Kyle and I 'need'?
