Default Has anyone run 26in tall tires?

I'm looking at the Hoosier A6's in 255/45/17, which are 26.1 inches tall. I'm running AP2 rears on all 4 corners with a 5mm spacer in front. The car has no inner fender liners and the front fenders have had the tabs rolled flat. I can roll the vertical lip out if necessary. I'm curious if anyone has run this tire before, or perhaps another 26in tall tire. Rears should be no problem. I'm too much of a wuss to order them and try it on the front without some input, though. I realize the gearing will change, but in my case that's a good thing. With the 4.57 final drive, I find myself running out of 2nd gear a little earlier than I'd like anyway. Thoughts?

I've used 285 30 18 and 275 35 18 RA1, which I believe are 25.9 and just over 26 inch. With a 255 and an aggressive offset you should not have any issue, but with an inboard fitment and low ride height you may bottom against the frame stiffening member if your spring rates aren't stiff enough.

Sorry just double checked, they're 24.9 and 25.4 (but then shaved). I suspect you will have rubbing issues on the frame member with a 26" tall tire.

The taller tire would work against the gain you sought by changing out your final drive. At the very least I'd stick with the OEM aspect ratio for this reason.

I'm aware of that. I welcome it, even. The 4.57's are too short for me, and I run out of 2nd gear earlier than I would like. Over the winter, I am seriously considering a switch back to a stock final drive.

If you plan on continuing to run in FP, I would go even taller than the OE, to maybe a 3.90 with the AP2 Trans. The 11" slicks that most of the FP Datsun guys run are only 23.0" tall. You have to go to 12+" slicks to get a 25" tire, and doing that on a 10" wheel may be problematic given their construction. Bigger wheels carry a weight penalty as you probably know.

Yeah I didnt figure getting to minimum weight was likely in any event, so the wider wheels may be worth it. I'll try to stop by and say hello in Lincoln, I've been thinking of starting an FP S2k for awhile now, so I'm glad to see someone actually doing it. A couple of the Datsun guys are buddies of mine so I'm sure I'll be in grid while they are running, and I'll be able to stop and say hi. Good luck!

I ordered 4 of the 275/40/17 A6's after lunch, by the way. I was too chicken to try the taller 255's, and I know the 275's will work.
I run 275/40/17's on a 9" wide wheel; my car is lower than stock on AST coilovers. The tires rub lightly against the frame rails (no worries), but they surprisingly rubbed through my fender liners and began rubbing on the headlight brackets! Not a major ordeal, but its enough to make me say that I wouldn't run anything taller.

Wow, those are some meats. Are you running those on the CE28's? 40 offset? How do you like them vs. the 255's?

Short answer: I'd prefer 255's (or a 275/35/17/)

A local shop wanted me to do a "Redline Time Attack" so I had to grab some good street tires. Unfortunately, I could not get the Nitto NT05's in a 255 (out of stock) so I went with 275's. They are huge. I'm not sure the car is much quicker with the 275's vs. 255's. Its really hard to say though, since I'm accustomed to running race tires. My car has a 100% stock engine down to the stock exhaust... it did not enjoy turning the 275's! The wider tire definitely provided some extra grip, but you could really feel the extra weight when accelerating. A 275/35/17 might be more ideal... slightly lighter and smaller diameter.

My lap times on the 275's were only about a second off of my times with 255 race tires though... take that for what it's worth
