Default Has anyone shortened the steering column?

Thanks to being a short, fat, dude, when I have my seat in the proper position for the pedals, I'm sitting too close to the wheel. I have a very thin quick release and adapter, and an almost flat wheel. I was thinking that during my winter upgrades, I'd take a shot a moving the wheel forward a bit. Has anyone else done this? Is our column a common diameter/spline configuration such that I can order a shorter one, or am I looking at something custom?

Good luck man... I have the opposite problem, I either am too close to the pedals, too far from the wheel, or too upright to be comfortable or see the guages. lol.. Id want to make mine longer if i could legally mod it in my class

Get a shift beeper. Then you don't have to look at the gauges....

What hub, quick release and wheel do you have?

the shortest installation I have seen was a Works Bells short hub, Snapff Quick release and a Sparco almost flat wheel. For me it was too close. I replaced the works bell hub with a Momo, and installated a 89mm off set wheel. Much better.

I've got the NRG short hub, which measures about 0.75 inches and an NRG wheel with no dish. The quick release, I'll have to look at the manufacturer when I get home. It's the ball-bearing type that was sold by TCDesign. I'll take some pics and measurements when I get home tonight.

The Snap:Off race version quick release is about 1". I think the TC Design Q/R is about 3". So if you changed Q/R to the Snapff, that would give you 2" more room.

Doesnt help when driving in normal conditions, and its still uncomfortable for more than like 10-15mins... so I just deal with being a little further than optimal in normal driving, and when I do autox im never sitting there long enough for it to be a problem and I can see the redline (can see from 0-2.5 and from 7.5 to 9 on the tach (approx) so I know when to upshift. since I autox I rarely need to downshift and if I do Im goin more than slow enough to not worry about it. but I am planning on a shift beeper for autox, just havent done it yet
