Heat Cycling
Another dirt cheap option would be to buy a set of AP1 rears for $100 on Craigslist, bore them out, then run them on the front of your car with your stock rear rims in back.
Exploding isnt the concern, side wall flex would be. Ive only Auto X'd a handful of times and each time, I never came close to 90+mph. Slip angle and car rotation with a slightly stretched tire make the car feel (my opinion and experience) more balanced and easier to control at high speeds (any speed actually
). Same reasoning track cars dont like small tread blocks and prefer a shaved tire...tread squirm and a lot of side wall flex are not a good thing on a track car. Things that may not be noticeable on an Auto X course I assume.
Auto Xers tend to go for a VERY stiff front sway bar to limit roll/rear wheel lift and as wide of a tire they can heat up fast. Im pretty sure it also depends on the persons level of driving skill. Those things mentioned above may not be noticeable if that individual isnt pushing the limits of the car I suppose.
I do run stock sways and a 17x10 with a 255 and is my setup of choice.

None of the considerations you mention are unique to track driving; I actually assert that precision is more important in autocross than in track work.
Again, stretching a big tire over a skinnier rim isn't ideal, but given that the original poster's budget is tight, I wanted him to at least know that it's an option.

I didnt say it was unique and never said it wasnt an option. You asked a question and I gave my opinion. Of course he can do it....but just like you, I wanted to make sure he was informed.
BTW...Dont heat cycle NT01s

I like the quick ninja edit
Come on now, you cant end it like that
In reality, yes he can do it, just like you can run 235 tire on a 10" rim. As I stated, I dont Auto X a lot....I dont really know what the competitive setup is for Auto Xers. I do know whats competitive for track, and its NOT a wide tire on rim that doesnt even fit as recommenced by the manufacturer.
My comments about Auto X are mainly based off what I read. I see (read) a lot of people run wide tires on a smaller rim....stiff sways etc....maybe because of rules..I dont know exactly. But If youre saying its MORE important for Auto X, then a 265 on a 6.5" rim is crazy talk for competition when he can run an 8" with a 255.
Ive never seen any S2K at the track with such a set up (265 on a 6.5 in rim) and be competitive. Since he mentioned he is in a COMPETITION (anything goes), I cant be wrong as no one would run such a set up.
He has a choice to run a 17x8 with a 255/40/17 or a 16x6.5 with a 245/50/16 in a competition......1mill is up for grabs if you win....which setup would you choose?
Again...yes he can do it, but why when he has a better option?
How bout this...we are both right lol

I understand -- I'm just saying that your opinion is wrong.
I truly laughed out loud when I read it.Ok, now let this sub-thread die.
