Most places require Snell rated helmets for track use. The specific requirements depend on the group, but SA2000 is the most stringent standard you'll find. Buy a Snell SA2000 rated helmet, and you'll be fine. Full face is safer, in the off chance you try to break your steering wheel with your face.

You want SA rating, not M

SA rated helmets are fire-proof and are subjected to different impact tests designed to resemble the sorts of repetitve, directed impacts you would see in a race car (e.g. against the rollbar) vs the single massive impact a motorcycle helmet is usually subjected to.

The SA rating is for cars
The M rating is for motorcycles

usually HPDE's only require M95 or whatever a normal motorcycle helmet is...... yes it is safer to get a SA2000, but you can usually be ok with a motorcycle helmet.

I took my motorcycle helmet with me to get my comp license....derp... i had to borrow a car helmet until i could buy one.

Ironically enough, in these days of more cost effective production to maximize profits, many SA and M helmets are the same; except for the fire safety lining. In other words, many M helmets are actually produced to a standard that allows them to pass the SA impact testing.
