Default Insurance question

No, not the same old "Can I get track day insurance."

I'm considering buying a race car. This one is street legal. It occurs to me that it would be much easier to, e.g., bring it in to the shop if it were registered and insured.

But our regular insurance would charge as if it were a full-time street car, which would cost about $800 per year.

I'm wondering if there's a specialty insurance company which would insure me for liability issues on those rare occasions when it is driven on the street, and insure the car for fire/theft, etc., for less than that.

Thanks.

You can get 1-day transit permits to drive an unlicensed car on the public roads. I'm not sure how insurance works for that, though.

You can probably also just call your insurance co. and get a quote for minimum legal liability insurance. Have you tried asking your insurance company about this?

You might also look into collector's car insurance.

Yeah, I talked to my insurance company; all they came up with was normal coverage, for $800/year.

It's probably worth asking about the temporary registration. I have one, unused. They're good for three days, and cost something like $35. Even if I have to do that ten times a year, I would be way ahead if I could get decent insurance coverage.

NEVER, NEVER, BUY MINIMUM LIMITS! Belive me you won't get sued for minimum limits after you injure someones body or property. If you want comp & coll. you just have to bite the bullit and pay for it. Collectors policies have limits and exclusions on racing/trackdays/DE/auto-x. Beware and always "read your policy".

Yeah, but the issue here is not really the insurance, it is the legality of occasionally driving the car in public. With the very occasional use involved, Mark would essentially be "self-insuring". That's his call to make.

also I didn't say minimum limits. I said the minimum liabilty. and while I can see how it could be confused I meant no comprenshive or collision. I would not suggest lowering the $ protection amounts for liabilty, especially if you own a house or any other valuable assets.
