If I was doing it again, and wasn't in a rush, I might look more closely at the mychron light mcl unit. The motorcycle guys use these a bunch, and they seem to be available discounted for under $200 with a transmitter!

I found a spot between the rearview mirror and the windshield. The receiver will sit right on top of the mirror bracket and looks like it has a clear view...

I ended up using double sided attachment tape to stick the receiver to the glass over the rearview mirror. Then ran the cord over the visor and down the pillar. The display is zip tied to the vents directly over the stereo cover--can't open the cover now-but everything is neat and tidy...
