M3 v. S2000...which is faster around a road-race course
This question is more directed towards current S2000 owners who previously owned an e36 M3 rather than "how many M3s have you passed up today?". Just curious since I used to take my M3 (stock + Yoko or Hoosiers) to the track and have never been passed up by an S2000 (yeah I know, driving skill matters most).
My guess is that the M3 is faster. I have never passed an e36 M3. Based on my s2000 track experience the Honda is an even match for an E30 M3, with the acceleration biased a little towards the s2000, top speed about the same.
The simplest answer is - it depends on the track. At Laguna, I was in a student's S2000 (bone stock on S02's) and a friend (equal driver) was in an E46M3. We were quite equal, except going up the hill where his torque took over. We chased each other for about 8 laps and no-one ran away - he eventually passed me but couldn't drive away. An E36 probably would have been a little slower than both of us
However at other tracks, the E36 I think would be faster than the M3. It all depends on the gearing, and tightness of the track. All things considered they are fairly equal on the track. That's why they are both in the SCCA T2 road-racing class, where they both get whomped by Mustangs and Camaros... brute power reigns on most open road-courses!
