i need some good tires for autox/street purposes. i'd like to not spend too much, and tread wear isn't that much of an issue since this isn't my DD. i'd go with the new falken's (the replacement for the azeni's) but i don't believe they offer them in our wheel sizes.

 

You aren't going to find a really good autox tire that also lasts on the street. If tread wear is not an issue, then why is price an issue? The two are linked, unless you use your car so infrequently that your tires get old before they wear out.

 

It's real simple. Stay with the stock tires unless you want to buy another set of rims and race tires (swaybar needed too). You can't do better than the S02s with out buying real r-compounds and you certainly can't find anything cheap that will beat the stockers.

 

Yeah the s02's are the best tires south of a R compound tire, they work great for autox duty.

 

I have heard of people buying RA-1's without shaving them for the street. Not sure if this is something I'd do. It's best to keep your race tires and street tires on separate rims!

 

The best R compound for the street is Toyo RA-1's which are cheaper than S-02's (barely). Hankook has the new RS-2 which is intended for ST class auto-x.

Kumho Victoracers! Cheaper than S02s and delightfully sticky! Just got mine this past weekend, got in a good amount of runs on Sunday to test them out. I'm in love...

 

Victoracers are better autocross tires than RA-1s, but are less suitable for street use. Which is right for you depends on your priorities...

 

a local s2000 driver tried these new tires at our first event and did not like them. he felt the sidewall flexed to much. he said they'd make a fine street tire, probably with better ride quality than the stock so-2's.


as a disclaimer, he was looking to run competitively in our local street tire class. i assume for someone who wants a good all around tire, these would be just fine. plus, these are so new, not many people have had any experiences, so others may feel differently, but i trust this guy's opinion.

as a positive, these are available in the proper sizes, 205,245, even 225 for the front if you wish, and they are relatively affordable.

 

so for the Hankook tires on oem 16's the correct tire size would be as follows??

205/50/16 front
245/45/16 rear

let me know if this is correct...as i would like to try these out if they are a good max performance summer tire. Hopefully they will be as good as the stock s0'2 in dry and better in the wet


also are there any other people running the Toyo Ra-1's on the street...i would like to know how they perform in wet conditions...

also where can you get the RA-1's???
