Need to check the rim width but do you really think that would affect the contact patch that much?!
Because the surface of the tire loose temperature far too quickly for an accurate reading. By the time you enter the pits to the time the car have come to a stop, the tires have already cooled if you just read the temp on the surface.
A lot of your surface temp will depend on ambient conditions. Carcass temp don't have that constraint (well, ok...not completely zero, but ambient conditions have less effect on the carcass provided you don't sit on your ass for 3 mins before sticking that probe in the tire)

true that...I always wondered how long the tire will keep temp or how fast the temp would fall down.
But I see most of the people havin glaser/IR type of pyrometers
