The site is currently down, but sccaforums.com has a whole section on towing race cars.
First useful post of the many you posted.

2nd useful post: enclosed trailer is very heavy - starts at 4k LB and go up from there. add a 3k LB S2000. You are already over the limit of most mid size truck / SUV, and over some of the smaller engined big truck / SUV. you should look for something with minimum 9k LB tow rating. buy one with tow package, it would save you headache later on.

of course big trucks get much lower mileage, and so on. so shop carefully.

enclosed trailer is much nicer than open trailer though. if you can, opt for "concession window" (4' x 6'), it helps a lot in getting in and out. they start at $6k, all the way to to $100k. if you never bought a trailer before, get ready for option list. There is an option for everything !! my guess is $10k is the minimum for a race car trailer. $15k for a nicely equipped ones.

sometime you get lucky, but in general, trailers hold value very well. I would recommend buying new. I've seen a ton of trailer selling more than new !!

cheapest open trailer is ~$2k OTD.

But what is the difference between a trailer and a preview?

Thanks for the post. I am in the process of finding a Crew Cab Titan with Big Tow Package which has a 9k tow rating. I figured 3500-4000 lbs for an enclosed trailer + 3000 pounds for the car and other misc. stuff coming to the track.

Was looking at getting either a 20' or 24' trailer. I was looking at used trailers, but am finding that they are still almost as expensive as a new one and that very few black trailers pop up for sale.

Ryan, are you looking at steel frame trailers or aluminum. aluminum will pull much eaiser, but cost much more typically. The extra weight may not be a big issue unless you plan on going east or over any significant moutain ranges with the titan

Honestly, the furthest I plan to travel is to Phoenix. The most common drive will be the 45 minute drive to Pahrump from Vegas followed by some of the SoCal tracks. Maybe a little longer every once in awhile to NorCal, but I don't think anything too crazy.

I don't think you can get a 24' steel enclosed trailer for under 4,500LB. and that's with no options. my guess it is ~5,000-6,000LB for a decently equipped trailer. plus 3,000LB S2K, 500LB of parts/fuel. you are close to 10,000LB. I've also heard a general rule of not towing over 80% of the rating. I think you would need a diesel.

what's your budget on an enclosed trailer ? most underestimate. most base model, don't come with radial tires, 2nd axle brake, wide >8', tail gate, extra door, interior lighting, breakaay kit, spare tires/wheels, battery box, tie down hooks, jack, spare tire cover, walk on roof, 3/4" plywood floor, roof vent, torsion suspension. list go on and on, we haven't even got to fancy stuff like A/C, awning, etc..

I have heard 75% as a rule. I was thinking the trailer would be 3,500 and the car plus other misc stuff 3,000 lbs including add-ons. That is about 72% which leaves a little bit of weight for people and some other things. I suppose I need to be looking in the 3500 lb or less range. Price-wise, the lower the better as anyone would say. I was looking in the $5k-$6k range, but it seems it may be worth it to wait a little bit longer and save up a few thousand more.
