Oil Cooler Selections / Sizing
So I am trying to size an oil cooler and I have a lot of questions can concerns.
I want to make sure the flow rate is not too high for the cooler but I don't know the average flow rate.
What are the average / desirable temperatures? 180F
Does anyone use a thermostatic bypass when the oil is cold? If so how did you set this up?
Any idea what the highest temperature oil that the cooler will see?
Seeing as I already have a turbo removing some system pressure how much pressure drop is too much?

I have an huge NASCAR cooler, forgot size, but huge. custom -10AN hoses and non thermostatic sandwich. In summer Buttonwillow (about 110F), my oil temp goes around 80C-90C most in 25mins session.
Last month(90F) was about 70C which is too low for me, so I have a greddy thermostatic adapter installed last week, hopefuly have chance to give a try by next month. Oil pressure is in normal range btw.

Oh I also had a smaller setup before, Greddy 19 row cooler with non thermo block adapter. Summer buttonwillow 120C most, almost 130c once only. Good for street(about 10-15c cooler than original) and some track weekends.

The greddy cooler might be good. Im sure greddy as a compy checks and collects data before finalizing their product. So their oil cooler is already most likly field tested and proven to have the proper cooling and flow. You pay mroe for their research and development.

But greddy retail $570, about $450 dealer price. My nascar setup only cost me $100 for brand new cooler core(about $70 for used), $50 for 4 earls -10an fittings, $30 for hoses, and $30 for oil block adapter($90 if you want thermostatic built-in one). all you have to do is spend a little time to cut the hose and make bracket for cooler.

Can you provide some more details on your setup such as links to the products and perhaps a picture of your mounting location?

mine is a fluidyne for a nascar rear end.
dont know what the temps get to but its not that hot.
link to hrp world and the actual cooler I am running.
here are some pictures where I put it.
you could put it somewhere else with out cutting the bumper it is nice and small..
the lines I made not hard to do but if I were to do it again I would not use steel braided line just some of the good rubber stuff.
generic sandwich plate with thermo control in it.
