The main reason to remove it is so the passenger sear can go back further. I don't think it would be any safer as if your're going to hit anything it's going to be the crossbar (esp. if the passenger seat is in) and having the protrusions where the crossbar attaches exposed seems worse than having the crossbar attached.

 

it really isn't to hard to take the cross bar out, as long as you cut enough plastic behind the pass seat.

i haven't taken mine out in a while b/c i'm a lazy mofo. i probably should b/c my cell phone charger is in my secret compartment and i can't get it out

 

I thought you take the harness bar out to access the secret compartment, not the diag.

 

you can't open it enough to even get your hand in the front part with diagonal section. if you take the diag out you can't even see the bar with the top up.
