Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like my numbers were pretty close, since you guys range from $16K for the budget-minded up to $35-40K for the higher-end guys.

And then you still have to factor in the day-to-day stuff (race entry fees, tires, brakes, etc). I need a sugar-momma!

Comparing costs on maintaining the #8 car in ITE vs H1 is relative. The maintenance will be the same although the interval is just more frequent. When things break, as they often do, and more often than you might want to expect including driver error and mechanical failure.

Building a car the second time is easier as there is less research and development. To build a podium finishing car, expect to spend in the range of $50K including vehicle. You can buy an high mile '00 and upgrade the drivetrain, or get a later model vehicle with a 2.2 for a premium. Ultimately the difference in terms of dollars might be close if you find the right deal.
eg. Salvage/auction '04 vs a well-used '00.

Starting with the cheapest donor vehicle makes the most sense IMO.

A race car is an appreciating liability. As time goes on, it requires more discretionary funding with little increase in performance, however you appreciate it more
